The Cabo de Gata Natural Park is in the province of Almeria in the region of Andalucia. In 1997 the park was designated a UNESCO biosphere reserve and as such it is a protected area, with diverse sealife, seaplants, and land flora and fauna. In 2001 it was included among the Specially Protected Areas of Mediterranean Importance. There is very little development in the park and what does exist is very carefully monitored.
The villages and towns that are situated within the park are easily accessed by private vehicle and the park can also be enjoyed on foot, bicycle or horseback. There are many reputable companies in the park that will hire out equipment and guides for you to explore the park. These include Land Rover tours to discover the less accessible parts of the park, geological tours to explore the volcanic landscape and diving tours. The incredibly clear waters of the area make this a superb place for diving.
